The University of Connecticut Student Health Services is seeking applicants for a 12 month permanent staff physician (UCP12).  Under the supervision of the Medical Director assumes the responsibility of providing quality, holistic and integrated health care for the students of the University of Connecticut and is expected to assume a leadership role in the development and implementation of Student Health Services guidelines and policies.

Responsibilities include:  Conducts comprehensive health assessments of patients to diagnose and treat acute and/or chronic medical and psychiatric disorders in a fashion consistent with state regulation and board certification. Responsible for individualized evaluation and assessment of clinical signs and symptoms, utilization of critical thinking in the establishment of a medical/psychiatric diagnosis for actual/potential health problems, and the use of current guidelines in the active management of medical conditions encountered.  Maintains accurate, legible, and confidential medical records. Documents medical evaluations, diagnoses, procedures, treatments, outcomes, education, referrals, and consultations consistent with AAAHC (Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care) standards. Orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic studies for evaluation, clinical decision making and continued care of the patient. Prescribes, dispenses and/or administers appropriate medication, corrective interventions and medical therapeutics. Educates and instructs patients on preventive care, medical and psychiatric issues, and the use of prescribed medical treatments and/or prescription medications including schedule II through V controlled substances.  Initiates emergency treatment of acute medical and psychiatric problems in a fashion consistent with state regulation and board certification. Facilitates and coordinates transitional or specialized care for patients who require services beyond the scope of SHS. Possesses admitting privileges to the infirmary unit.  Responsible for supervising patient care from admission through discharge.

Conducts oneself in a professional and collegial manner with fellow health care professionals and Student Health Services staff members.  Provides screening and brief intervention to address health risks such as high risk alcohol use, sexual activity, tobacco use, violence and safety, and mental health concerns.  Participates in ongoing review and revision of standard guidelines used in clinical practice. Participates in the evaluation of the quality of care through a peer review process which is part of the Quality Assurance program.  Presents clinically relevant in-services and coordinates interdisciplinary case discussions. Actively participates in working groups, teams and committees. Participates with other providers in the SHS on-call rotation, which includes weekend clinic coverage.  May also work holidays and variable shifts.  May supervise and train medical students, physicians in postgraduate medical training (residents and fellows), and students in other allied health programs.  Actively participates in regional and national professional organizations.  Maintains medical licensure in the State of Connecticut.  Maintains board certification in primary specialty.  Maintains clinically competent patient care through ongoing continuing education as required by specialty certification boards and state licensure.  Acts as a liaison between students, parents, and the Dean of Students office in regard to academic and health issues. Continually maintains patients’ privacy as outlined in federal privacy laws. Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
  2. Licensure or eligibility for licensure in the State of Connecticut.
  3. Board Certification in Family Medicine, Pediatrics or Internal Medicine.
  4. Federal DEA number and state controlled substance registration.
  5. Current CPR/AED certification.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience in working in a college health setting.
  2. Competency with minor office medical procedures.
