Daycare Substitute Assistant Teacher

Department:       Cynthia White Children’s Center (CWCC)

Job Status:           Variable Hours, Non-Benefit Eligible
Schedule:             Center is open 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., Monday-Friday, with the possibility
                               of Saturday a.m. scheduling 
Reports to:          Director of The Cynthia White Children’s Center
 
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Cynthia White Children’s Center (CWCC) is an onsite, full-day childcare center, providing services primarily for employees of The Hotchkiss School.  The CWCC operates on an academic year basis following the Hotchkiss School annual school calendar.  Responsibilities of this position include implementing developmentally appropriate practices and curriculum set forth by the primary teacher guiding the substitute teacher, while maintaining a caring, cooperative relationship with children, parents, and co-workers.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSBILITIES:
 
  • Provide individual and group instruction to meet the needs of the children.
  • Organize and participate in recreational activities, such as indoor and outdoor games, reading, painting, and cooking, etc.
  • Instruct and assist children with health and personal habits: such as washing hands, wiping noses, eating, resting, and toilet habits.
  • Prepare and serve meals (Baby Room only)
  • Dress children and change diapers.
  • Record daily observations, information of activities, and meals served and eaten.
  • Organize, clean and store toys / materials to ensure order in activity areas.
  • Responsible for maintaining cleanliness and sanitation standards.
  • Support children's emotional and social development, encouraging understanding of others and positive self-concepts.
  • Ensure safe play conditions.
  • Observe and follow established safety procedures and perform duties in compliance with child care licensing requirements.
  • Bring any concerns to the Director’s attention.
  • Punctuality for assigned work scheduled is essential to support programming and proper staffing ratios.
  • Perform other duties as needed and assigned.
 
 QUALIFICATIONS:
 
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or combination of education and work experience in a related field.
  • Knowledge of early childhood development, programs, methods, materials, and practices used in early childcare educational settings.
  • A minimum 1-2 years experience caring for young children.
  • Certification in First Aid and CPR required, and renewed to maintain active certification.
  • Knowledge of safety practices, health and safety regulations.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must be a team player: diplomacy and tact and the ability to work effectively with parents and other colleagues.
  • Ability to demonstrate flexibility/adaptability.
  • Ability to conduct one’s self in a professional and focused manner.
 
PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:
 
  • Patience and physical stamina is required.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, run (when needed to supervise children), stand, sit (in small chairs), squat, reach, talk and hear.
  • Must be able to occasionally climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • Must be able to frequently lift and/or move 20-25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move 35-50 pounds carrying children.
  • Must be able to push a stroller and take long walks.
  • Must be able to remain patient and effective with frequent interruptions.
  • Must be able to change diapers, feed, and/or clean children and assist children in using the restroom. Children are newborn up through preschool age.
  • Given the persistent risks of the spread of the Covid-19 virus -- risks that are heightened due to the emergence of more highly transmissable variants -- all employees of the School are required to be fully vaccinated by their first day of work as a condition of employment.  Employees who are unable to receive the vaccine doe to disability, medical condition, or a sincerely held religious belief may request an exemption, which will be reviewed by the School to determine the availability of any reasonable accommodations.
