IT Level 2 Technician - Team Lead

The IT Level 2 Technician – Team Lead is responsible for effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of systems hardware and software and related infrastructure. This position participates in technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within our service offerings. This position ensures that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures adhere to industry standards that allow staff, volunteers, and partners to accomplish their goals.

This position is accountable for Windows, MacOS and appliance based systems that support our client infrastructure. Responsibilities on these systems include engineering and provisioning, operations and support, maintenance and research and development to ensure continual innovation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Engineering and Provisioning

  • Engineering of system-related solutions for various project and operational needs.
  • Install new / rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements.
  • Install and configure systems to support Active Directory Services, Email, File/Print and Application servers.
  • Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures.
  • Contribute to and maintain system standards.
  • Research and recommend innovative, and where possible automated approaches for system administration tasks.  Identify approaches that leverage our resources and provide economies of scale.

Operations and Support

  • Perform as Team Lead responsible for training, instruction and setting the work pace.
  • Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.
  • Perform regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions.
  • Perform regular file archival and purge as necessary.
  • Create, change, and delete user accounts per request.
  • Provide Tier II/other support per request from various constituencies.  Investigate and troubleshoot issues.
  • Repair and recover from hardware or software failures.  Coordinate and communicate with impacted constituencies.
  • Provide first level user support as needed.

Maintenance

  • Apply OS patches and upgrades on a scheduled basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities. Configure / add new services as necessary.
  • Upgrade and configure system software that supports GIS infrastructure applications or Asset Management applications per project or operational needs.
  • Maintain operational, configuration, or other procedures.
  • Perform periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning.
  • Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required.  Configure CPU, memory, and disk partitions as required.
  • Maintain data center environmental and monitoring equipment.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

Required Skills: 

  • 1+ years’ experience in a Team Lead role
  • 4-6 years in a Level 1 or Level 2 role, supporting LAN, WAN, VLAN and advanced networking infrastructure
  • Experience in a Windows environment, some Linux experience will be a plus
  • Working knowledge and/or understanding of Windows Server, Hyper-V, Active Directory, MozyPro, Sophos (UTM, encryption and endpoint protection) and knowledge of backup concepts and design
  • Minimum of CompTIA A+ and N+ certifications or equivalent

Highly Desirable Skills: 

  • Experience using Microsoft Windows Server, Exchange, and Microsoft SQL
  • Familiarity with Linux is desirable
  • Working knowledge and experience with
    • server hardware and options
    • Sophos devices
    • network switches
    • NinjaRMM or equivalent monitoring systems
    • VOIP

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor (4-year) degree, with a technical major, such as engineering or computer science.
  • Systems Administration/System Engineer certification in Microsoft is a plus.
  • Four to six years industry experience.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:

  • Responsibilities sometimes require working evenings and weekends, sometimes with little advanced notice.
  • Ability to life and move up to 45 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Must be well organized, follow up issues, and see problems through until solved
  • Strong customer service, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and dependable vehicle to travel to client locations
  • Provides support for network, servers, personal computers, printers and other peripheral devices at multiple locations. ​

TRAVEL: 20% to client sites as needed. This position is based in the Hartford office.
