Groundskeeper/Ice Rink Technician

Schedule: Full time, calendar year
. A daily minimum work schedule of Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  Ice Rink Technician work schedule varies depending on the facility schedule.  Typical work schedule commencing September or October through to March requires availability between 7:00 a.m. & 11:00 p.m for an 8 hour shift, working a weekend schedule on a rotating basis.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Ice Rink duties as assigned – this position may be limited to grounds work with the potential for work in the Ice Rink in the future.
The groundskeeper works independently and part of a team to perform routine grounds keeping functions.  This position requires the performance of manual duties in connection with the maintenance and upkeep of the Hotchkiss grounds which includes the campus, roadways, nine-hole golf course, and potentially two ice rinks.  Assignments vary and may include indoor as well as outdoor maintenance work, as the needs of the School require.
Primary functions include, but are not limited to: maintain grounds, maintain buildings accessibility and appearance, maintain safe working and learning environment for all school community members.  The incumbent is accountable for high quality job performance and for effective participation and support of school initiatives to best support the values and mission of our learning community at The Hotchkiss School.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Maintain and care for School grounds, parking lots and other paved areas.
  • Prepare seeding or transplanting beds by cultivating soil and adding fertilizer or chemicals, if needed.
  • Plant seeds, bulbs, tree seedlings and shrubbery so that resulting growth will produce an attractive appearance.
  • Prune trees and trim hedges to promote growth and improve appearance.
  • Mow lawns with hand, power and riding mowing equipment.
  • Operate snow plow, and remove snow from walkways with shovels.
  • Operate ice resurfacing equipment.
  • Operate skate sharpening equipment.
  • Install sprinkler systems; water lawns and flower beds.
  • Inspect flowers, shrubs and trees for evidence of insects, fungi and other pests, and spray or dust chemicals on infected areas.
  • Adjust and repair equipment such as mowers, sprinklers and hedge shears.
  • Collect and dispose of leaves, clippings and other refuse.
  • Lifting and removal of furniture and/or equipment when requested.
  • Perform custodial duties primarily in the ice rinks, including trash removal, vacuuming, sweeping, floor mopping, glass cleaning, and puck mark removal.
  • ​Additional duties and responsibilities as needed and assigned.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
  • High School diploma preferred or GED.
  • One to three years of landscaping maintenance and/or landscape construction preferred.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated ability to operate machinery such as: large and small lawn mowers, tractors, utility vehicles, backhoe, pesticide sprayer and other grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Strong ability to interact in a pleasant demeanor with students, faculty, and fellow staff.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and ability to work independently within given procedures and work directives.
  • Ability to work effectively in a member of a team.  
  • Strong attention to detail.
PHYSICAL CONDITIONS
  • Work is conducted in a school environment.                                                 
  • ​Ability to frequently lift and/or carry 50+ pounds.
  • Must be able to ascend and descend stairs and ladders.
  • Ability to work with hazardous materials (chemicals & fertilizers) using the appropriate protective equipment in work areas.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, with excessive dust, dirt, temperature, rain, or snow.
  • Ability to work in the ice rinks with cold temperatures.
  • Ability to sit on a tractor or operate other motorized equipment for no less than 4 continuous hours.
  • Frequently standing/stooping, bending & kneeling, shoveling, including extensive walking, for long periods of time on different types of terrain.
  • Overtime can be required, especially during inclement weather (part of the essential staff).
