Position Overview

As a chemist with Nalas, the Chemist will be part of a team responsible for the synthesis and development of novel materials and/or crystallization processes. Chemist leads and independently conducts research as an integral team member. The Chemist has fundamental research skills, understands the technical literature and can interactively improve moderately complex syntheses through implementation of alternate chemistry, optimal processing parameters, and targeting target new compounds. The Chemist quickly assembles and modifies moderately complex laboratory equipment to prepare, isolate, purify, and characterize synthesized materials. The Chemist provides leadership, utilize and help to maintain a state-of the art chemical development laboratory including automated lab reactors, process analytical tools and various off-line analytical tools.

Job Requirements (MUST BE US CITIZEN):

The Chemist knows which analytical methods (e.g. liquid and gas chromatography, thermal analysis, NMR, etc) to use; and also develops and/or customizes methods suitable for the respective process. Chemist independently performs synthesis experiments and purification procedures by using standard chemistry laboratory techniques or new methods from the literature to obtain pure, characterized compounds for evaluation. The Chemist reliably interprets and analyzes experimental results, and makes recommendations based on his/her own analysis and conclusions. The Chemist has the responsibility to maintain lab notebooks in a manner which allows others to understand findings from each experiment, including interpretations, conclusions, and path forward for further experimentation.

Although the Chemist works under guidance from management, latitude and creativity for discretionary decisions and independence of action within guidelines established by their supervisor will be granted. The Chemist is expected to always operate in a safe and efficient manner.

Qualifications

The qualified Chemist has a Bachelor’s (1+ years experience) or MS/PhD degree in Chemistry with strong emphasis on organic or polymer chemistry. He/she is proficient in independently conducting organic synthesis steps including: isolation and purification. He/she has extensive knowledge of organic/polymer chemistry, characterization, and synthesis techniques. He/she is effective at gathering, integrating, and reporting experimental results. The Chemist is highly skilled, extremely motivated, and results-oriented. He/she exhibits technical and operational proficiency solving problems of moderate complexity, ensuring completion of projects in area of expertise, and utilizing judgment within general parameters for appropriate method development, experimentation, validation and data analysis. He/she is proficient in basic computer programs such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and SciFinder. The Chemist also demonstrates good interpersonal, communication, organizational, teamwork and time management skills.

Technical Primary Responsibilities

  • Performs multiple tasks concurrently while maintaining up to date lab records.
  • Independently support all phases of research including planning, preparation, calibration, application, evaluation, data analysis, maintenance, and when necessary, appropriate disposal.
  • Make novel observations, collect and interpret data and draw sound scientific conclusions based on data analysis.
  • Present project reviews before the team and utilize technical writing skills to effectively communicate results in report form to customers and management and for publications.
