Industrial Electrician

Job Description
Installs, repairs, adjusts, modifies, and services plant's electronic equipment.  Also performs similar duties in connection with the plant's electrical apparatus, power and control.  Must have ability to connect laptop computer to AC/DC drives and PLC’s for troubleshooting purposes.

Duties

Tools & Equipment
Wiring diagrams, illustrations, electrical and electronic tools, gauges, calibrating & testing equipment, hand tools, drill press, grinder, electric drills, power hack saw, wire stripper, pipe threading machine, soldering iron, safety devices, benders and miscellaneous hand tools.

Materials
AC and DC motors and generators, transformers, rectifiers, electronic controls and regulators, circuit breakers, control panels, starters, switches, lighting equipment, various mill and production equipment, electronic control systems, recording equipment, electronic gauges and detectors, public address systems, & other communications equipment, annunciators, time clock, vacuum tubes, transistors, transducers, wire & cable, conduits, fittings, replacement parts, etc.

Direction Exercised
Works alone or directs helper and other workmen, as required.

Working Procedure
Receives wiring diagrams, illustrations, specifications, and instructions covering the scheduled, emergency repairs or work to be done.  Analyzes circuits, wiring diagrams, and drawings as required to install, repair, adjust calibrate, trouble-shoot and determine material or replacement parts needed to make necessary repairs, modify or service electronic devices and systems, including communication systems, various mill and production equipment, electronic control, power and distribution control equipment, measuring, recording, processing, indicating devices, gauges, etc. 

Plans details or work, considers safety precautions and the isolation of circuits to cause minimum interference to operations.  Determines tools and material needed.  Locates source of trouble by tracing, testing and inspecting fault.  Dismantles, inspects, repairs, adjusts or replaces parts, wiring motors, generators, power distributions and control panels, circuit breakers, rectifiers, etc.  Reassembles, tests, and adjusts equipment.  Determines material or replacement needs and selects approach to trouble-shooting and repair problems.  Makes sketches of parts and layouts.  Designs and constructs adaptations or conversions of component parts.

Installs conduit fittings, switches, controls, and fixtures.  Wires and connects all types of electrical equipment for new installations or replacement of facilities.  Makes required splices on connections.  Adjusts all equipment for proper operating characteristics.  Assembles, inspects, adjusts, repairs, or replaces faulty parts and wiring on electronic devices.  Makes mechanical and electrical repairs as required in connection with the servicing of electronic and other equipment.

Maintains, installs, or repairs all communication cables or wiring.  Makes power cable splices.  Climbs on building and equipment to make inspections, repairs, and installations.

Isolates circuits to cause a minimum of interference to operations.  Plans and performs work requiring a thorough knowledge of electrical and electronic principles, wiring specification codes, properties of various materials, and principles of operation and application of equipment, etc.

Fabricates parts as required, using machine and hand tools common to the trade.  Works in shop or field, as required. Maintains records on electronic equipment.

Follows all shop safety and housekeeping rules.

Maintains quality and quantity performance standards.

Performs other miscellaneous duties as required.

Knowledge

  • Electrical/Electronic safety codes.
  • Tools and electrical/electronic test equipment as applicable to testing, installing, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical/electronic circuits/systems.
  • DC and AC circuitry/drives.
  • Applicable math calculations (power requirements, etc.)
  • Electronic circuits/circuit boards (active/passive components).
  • Diagnostic techniques.
  • Advanced computer knowledge.
  • Troubleshooting electrical/electronic to the component level.
  • Installation of motors and controllers.

Skills

  • Ability to diagnose, troubleshoots, and repair complex electrical/electronic circuits/equipment which cannot be solved solely by reference to manufacturer’s manuals or similar references.
  • Work from complex electrical/electronic schematics.
  • Has mechanical aptitude.
  • Efficient use of tools and electrical/electronic test equipment.

Pre-Requisites

  • Five plus years of verifiable work experience as an electrician in an industrial environment.
  • Lift 40 pounds from floor to chest.
  • Climb stairs/ladder when necessary to install/service electrical components/equipment.
  • Willingness to accept direction.
  • Willingness to work in a Team structure.
  • Other duties as assigned.
